We've had a succulent graft garden for about 6 months. The graft is now turning dark brown. What can be done for it? Is it dying?

Well, the orange graft has gotten considerably worse since my prior post. About 20% of the orange graft's volume is now sunken in. It looks quite bad.

Can this just be cut off from the top of the host succulent? Do I need to seal the top of the host succulent with anything to prevent desiccation/degradation? Candle wax for example?
